Piano Lessons Equal To Smarter Kids!

Posted under Art and Culture by admin on Friday 6 November 2009 at 10:50 pm

The report, conducted by E. Glenn Schellenberg of the University of Toronto at Mississauga, studied the effects of music or voice lessons on young children over a nine month period. He used four groups of 6-year-olds as part of his study, the first enrolled in weekly piano lessons, the second group took vocal lessons, the third took a drama class, and the fourth group was not enrolled in any extracurricular activities. All the music participants were taught at Canada's Royal Conservatory of Music.

Before the study began, all of the children had their IQs tested with a full three-hour intelligence test. All of the students then began first grade, and the three designated groups started their weekly lessons. At the end of the year, they all took the exact same IQ test, however, the results that came out were nevertheless pretty interesting.

On average, all of the children experienced at least a 4.3 point increase in IQ, mainly due to the effects of their learning in school. The kids enrolled in drama class showed no statistical difference in improvement over those in no outside classes, but those in the music classes actually averaged an extra increase of 2.7 points on average than the children in the other two groups.

According to study author Schellenberg, what causes taking music lessons a motivating factor for increased IQ effect, is that any music lessons have many multidimensional facets involved in learning and getting mastery over them. Such as learning about chords, music interval, expressing emotion, memorizing. It is this multidimensional nature of music that exercises the kids brains.

So if you start your kids into piano lessons now (it's never too late, but the sooner the easier it is for your tots to grasp), you could see an extra growth in their thinking and reasoning skills by the beginning of next year. But don't just enroll them into any random music or piano class available around the corner of your street.

It is important to select a teacher for your children who will teach all the fundamental basics, involving different facts of music theory and technique rather than someone who will simply teach them to play simple songs.

Helping them to consistently practice outside of piano lessons will also be important for the success of their skills and their growth in IQ. This means instilling discipline in them and urging your kids to practice a different tune that they fancy. Creativity blooms when you give them space.

Unfortunately, this IQ increasing effect does not work for adults, according to Schellenberg. It works best with young, growing, and impressionable minds. So what better reason to get your kids learning to play the piano right now!

Planning to enroll your child for piano lessons? Buying a good instrument for home practice is a must. Don't know where to start? Leave your concerns behind with the help of a qualified, reputable piano dealer, Covington, LA. For all your playing needs, visit http://www.hallpiano.com

A review of the movie Capitalism: A Love Story

Posted under Art and Culture by admin on Monday 19 October 2009 at 7:57 pm

This movie brings about a general knock on the capitalistic approach and this is not out of tune with Mr. Moores previous movies.

Partly, there is a general sense that the major financial giants have raided the general public for another round of super bonuses and more money to slush around with. Giant financials seemed to pull the strings endlessly, filling their coffers again with taxpayer money.

In the context of the broad base of taxpayers, mostly lugging away at relatively lower paying jobs, this is not of out context with reality.

As usual Mr. Moore sometimes slants the angle to far to get the points but it does resonate aptly and he gets some good mini interviews with some of the players especially in Congress.

His notions and conclusions are somewhat contradictory. There should be more guarantees of a job, home and so on according to him, but that doesnt seem to be taking into account current realities where something like 25 percent of workers in major cities are freelancers and the earlier job models dont hold in and lots of free information is available in the web which means that in a service based economy, it is harder to charge for the services to the extent that it could be done previously.

It is interesting that according to the movie there is a possible tie in to Roosevelt understudies and the model of reconstruction in post World War 2 European reconstruction which was U.S. led but evolved with greater social enhancements for individuals than those that ever came about here.

Obviously with the foreclosures there is also the fault of some people that took on mortgages they couldnt hang with and others who aptly took advantage of the boom in flipping houses.

But the whole state of affairs points to what is wrong with the economy and working class in the first place.

The developed skill set of workers, so called talented or not, is very much geared toward market maneuverings and there is only so much of skill that actually comes from that that has wider and useful benefits that actually forms into a contribution to society.

Even the high flyer derivative players, are just playing high stakes with other peoples money. But could this also be the fault of the other people who handed their money over and might they also be so called greedy. Bottom line is lots of people wanted something for nothing.

It was annoying the way the movie treated the issue of derivatives in particular where it even shows a Harvard professor stumbling to explain them. You wonder if this was just a staged scene for the movie rather than a clip.

Derivatives are nothing extraordinary or that complicated, it is just financial products put to creative mathematics and that is about it, so there is no reason to insult anybodys intelligence by calling this things nearly without understanding or difficult to grasp.

It isnt necessarily true that in the long run the large financial players will not get caught and be legally responsible, although they had a long and easy free legal ride before they got caught.

Obviously enough leeway was out there, to let these so called financial big shots go unfettered or look to go unfettered as in the perfect example of Henry Paulson, who insultingly sends in a three page request giving him the keys to nearly a trillion dollars of taxpayer money to remedy as he pleases, not withstanding his own possible ties to the money within his near billion dollar personal fortune. Should a billionaire be given on top of that nearly a trillion of taxpayer dollars to play with? Is that the right window to a view of the common man and his toils?

The movie garners some nice footage from old union disputes, the historical Obama campaign and victory announcement and the unfortunate state of some of the cities in terms of faltering housing.

Probably the most haunting scene was a banker who went to get the house back from a sit in and as the scene unfolded he is standing on the front porch, not really reacting to any side but just in the state of unspoken bewilderment as to how these things and problems got so big.

Taking You Talent to the Next Level - Living the Silver Screen Life

Posted under Art and Culture by admin on Tuesday 21 July 2009 at 7:35 pm

Good looking! Have a great voice! Can act! Well, if you have all these and love to do what you do then its time you took your passion or your hobby (defined as the thing that we want to do the most, but just can't!!) to the next level. Well you aren't straight away going to be a Hollywood star and will have to start low so how about being on TV! All this is not as difficult as it sounds if approached in a practical manner.

So don't just sit on your couch holding the remote and dreaming about being there. Let's see some great ways on how you can start working on showcasing your skills and make it big (and I mean it!) on the silver screen.

Getting noticed: - Most actors, while auditioning for various production houses land up with small roles to act in commercials or soaps as extras. These roles are not significant but enough to get you noticed. If you are an aspiring singer, try approaching companies of established artists for the job of a background vocalist. Good background vocalists are always in demand and if you are one then you can't help but get noticed. Remember that “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity”. So being around, being seen and being heard is the key.

Be There and Be Everywhere: - You must have noticed how the concept of Reality TV has picked up during the last decade. Well the best way to tell the world that you can be on TV is to audition for one. There are a variety of shows that you can choose from, such as adventure, acting, singing etc. You may find it difficult to get through, the first few times, but keep trying. If you feel like giving up, then imagine the feeling of being there just once. Enough to keep you going!?

Walking Smart: - So, you are good looking. Well, don't just sit there! Do something about it like auditioning for a modeling agency! Being a model can be a tiring job but is easy, high- paying and is sure to get you on TV in no time. And better yet, if you get noticed it's only a matter of time that so good director may be casting you for a considerably long role for his TV show.

Getting on TV once in a while is not a big deal but if you want to get there and stay there, then perseverance becomes a necessity. You will need to keep on it rather than lose heart. Hard work always pays!

These tips are sure to get you on TV at least once if not make you the biggest TV star of the year.

When Did Photography Become An Art Form?

Posted under Art and Culture by admin on Saturday 18 July 2009 at 11:08 am

Since the dawn of time, humanity has searched for ways to express the world around them in visual form. Sculptors like Praxiteles, Auguste Rodin, Michelangelo and the unknown artist who crafted the Venus de Milo have filled the art history books. Painters, such a Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Salvador Dali, have their works in hundreds of museums and on the walls of private collectors.

Although the question of whether photography is an art form is still half-heartedly debated by some, and has been since the 16th century, many photographers have joined the ranks of famous artists. Several photographs, framed or enlarged, black and white or color, now populate the walls and museums of the world. However, only in the past century or so has photography been recognized as any kind of art, much less fine art.

Originally, photography was the “unwanted stepchild” of the arts, a poor relation to drawing and painting. Because of the camera's mechanical nature, say the detractors, it doesn't require any real skill. The need for hand to eye coordination is minimal, the subject of the photograph comes “ready-made” and the photographer doesn't need to be creative or imaginative. In short, a monkey could do it.

Considered an industrial art or a documentary device, the medium still caused much consternation amongst the artists of other mediums. Many were afraid that photography would cause the loss of livelihood. Others saw a disintegration of the arts, distorted by the photographic lens.

So what changed? The art world met Peter Henry Emerson. A photographer himself, Emerson believed that, if a photograph brought “aesthetic pleasure to the viewer”, it was art. No matter how it came into being. In 1889, he founded a fine-art photography movement, calling it “naturalistic” photography.

George Davison and Horsley Hinton, along with Emerson, wrote many pieces claiming that their chosen art was not just a method of documenting and recording. In addition to the common uses, they suggested, photographs could be pictorial in nature, selected for their appeal and beauty.

Around 1892, pictorial photography became accepted throughout the world, vindicating many who had argued for the medium to be included under “art”. That same year, Alfred Stieglitz begged photographers in America to bring art photography to the country. In 1897, America embraced the first pictorial exhibit in Philadelphia and has accepted as an art form ever since.

Once acceptance was garnered, photographers began cropping up everywhere. All you really needed was to own a camera and a good eye. For instance, the “father of photojournalism”, Alfred Eisenstaedt, started taking photos at the young age of 14. He sold his first photograph in 1927 and had never had any training - just a good eye and a camera. His unstaged photographs, taken in the spur of a moment, have delighted and amazed viewers since 1928.

Throughout his entire career, Eisenstaedt never put aside the “amateurish” sense of adventure. He never felt the need to overburden himself with unnecessary equipment, and carried out his photojournalistic assignments merely by catching events at the right time.

Ansel Adams, whose landscape photography graces many walls, calendars and book pages, is another example. Although he had trained to become a concert pianist, a trip to Yosemite National Park and a Kodak Brownie box camera began a new era for Adams. From 17 until his death in 1984, he dedicated his life, an extensive array of fine art photography and music to the beauty of nature and the need to preserve the natural world's wonders and resources.

Whether art or science, one cannot look upon the works of Ansel Adams, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Anne Geddes, Dorothea Lange, Edward Curtis and many others without feeling at least a small sense of awe. If a picture truly says a thousand words, their voices will be heard for many years to come.Araman Studio is a creator of beautiful things.
